Description:
ICP Sensor Function, Diagnostics, & Troubleshooting for 6.0L Power Stroke The Injector Control Pressure (ICP) sensor measures the pressure in the high- pressure oil circuit of the 6.0L Power Stroke engine. This engine uses a Hydraulic Electric Unit Injector (HEUI) system where pressurized engine oil creates the final fuel injection pressure, which can exceed 3,000 psi, resulting in fuel injection pressures up to 26,000 psi. The ICP sensor's reading is crucial for controlling the Injection Pressure Regulator (IPR) valve, which adjusts the pressure in the high-pressure oil system. This system ensures the engine operates efficiently by maintaining the desired oil pressure based on various operating conditions such as engine load and speed. Sensor Location by Model Year 1. 2003 - Early 2004 Models: The ICP sensor is located beneath the turbocharger and next to the IPR valve, accessed through the High-Pressure Oil Pump (HPOP) cover. (This is not the correct part, See Stab Motorsports part 10450122) 2. Late 2004 - 2007 Models: The ICP sensor is on the passenger side valve cover, near the glow plug controller, making it easier to replace than on earlier models. (This is the correct part) Symptoms of a Faulty ICP Sensor - Intermittent engine stutter or rough idle - Hard starting or long crank times - No start condition - Engine stalling - Reduced overall performance Diagnostic Steps 1. Using a Scan Tool: - Monitor the following parameters: ICP (Injection Control Pressure), ICP Desired, and IPR (Injection Pressure Regulator) Duty Cycle. - Compare the readings with the values provided below: - Engine Cranking: ICP should be a minimum of 500 psi. - Engine Idling: ICP should be between 600 and 800 psi. - IPR Duty Cycle: Should be up to 84% while cranking and around 30% at idle. 2. Unplugging the ICP Sensor: - Unplugging defaults the ICP reading to 750 psi. If the engine starts normally with the ICP sensor unplugged, replace the sensor and its pigtail. Common Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) - P2284: ICP sensor range/performance issue - P2285: Low circuit reading (common) - P2286: High circuit reading - P2287: Intermittent circuit issue (very common) - P2288: Excessively high pressure - P2289: High pressure with the engine off - P2290: Low pressure condition - P2291: Low pressure during cranking (common)
