This unique and lovely species from Western China produces drumsticks of beautiful rose-lilac blooms with dark red threads in July. These honey-scented heads appear to be pink velvet. Despite its rarity, this well-mannered shrub thrives in sun or light shade and fertile soil. It lives on 2500–3000 metre hills in W Xinjiang, China, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Russia. At any time, thinly cover plant seeds for indoor planting with compost or grit in a cool, well-lit outdoor seed pot. Many species only germinate in April after cooling or freezing in the moist seed pot in winter, therefore avoid artificial heat. Grow these perennial plants in small pots until they can be potted or planted.
